Group Engineering Manager

The Role

The Group Engineering Manager (GEM) will lead, manage, monitor and assign tasks to engineering and technical personnel within the group in the design development of complex project and ensure compliance with architectural and engineering standards.

Typically working with the Country managers of each country, this person will oversee the deliverables of a team of Senior Design Engineers located in various countries in Africa. The countries are not limited to Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The GEM will liaise with the Group Head Urban Planning & Design, Head of DCC, Head of Utilities, and City Managers for each country in fulfilment of its roles and responsibilities, responsible for all Engineering deliverables and signoff prior to implementation of construction activities.

The role will report to the Group Head of Construction and Delivery.

Specific Responsibilities Include

Maintaining and improving technical standards, engineering processes and procedures

Preparation of conceptual designs and management of detailed design consultants, preparation of scope documents,

Preparation of scopes, estimates, budgets and coordination of a wide range of technical studies,

Provision of technical support to investment development specialists

Provision of construction technical support.

Training and development of assigned personnel.

Planning and control of Engineering budgets for in house personnel and Engineering Consultants.

Planning and coordination of the project and staff engineering efforts for assigned project.

Maintaining contacts with key personnel of client organizations relating to engineering and, as appropriate, to business development matters.

Exercises technical supervision over all phases of the engineering activity for studies and projects and provides operational supervision over assigned Sr Design Engineers in all their countries.

Contacts client management at key points throughout projects to ensure that engineering aspects are meeting client requirements.

Directs and reviews the engineering activities to ensure that work quality is satisfactory and appropriate technical personnel development programs are conducted.

Participates in project planning sessions at the proposal stage to provide technical guidance and information.

Endorses and approval of all engineering deliverable including estimates for use in bid budgets, definitive estimates and final budgets, etc.

Participates, as required, in engineering and construction reviews, management reviews and proposals.

Reviews and monitors engineering progress to ensure that budgets and schedules are being met. Initiates appropriate corrective action, if required, and contributes experience and expertise in the solution of difficult problems.

Keeps abreast of technological development and trends that could lead to new applications or new markets for the company’s business development projects and participates in special studies to examine long term trends and business prospects.

Endorses policies, as appropriate for approval, and approves programs which are unique to a project.

Represents Engineering Management as required. This may include licensing hearings, iso certification, meetings with major equipment suppliers or special communications.

Directs the annual performance review program within Group Head C& D, and conducts performance reviews, coaching, and career development discussions with Engineering employees.

Ensure preparation and evaluation of feasibility studies necessary to prepare a proposal

Manage and ensure detailed infrastructure drawings from concept designs up to completion and production of As-Built drawings.

Ensure preparation of final reports and drawings, submission to relevant authorities and obtaining of the necessary approvals.

Ensure Cost analysis of works with the QS from the feasibility stage up to the final account stage of the works.

Coordinate with external peer reviewers on the proposed designs to ensure sufficiency of the designs and implement any changes proposed.

Conduct regular meetings with project stakeholders and the wider project team to ensure proper coordination, collaboration of designs and proposals.

Analyzing project requirements relating to cost, functionality, aesthetics, buildability and scheduling and challenging ordinary approaches, assumptions and design ideas to develop and deliver novel solutions that appeal in both form and function.

Ensuring all work is fully documented to a high standard by drafting statements of work, proper and competent reports, proposals, applications and contracts.

Managing project design changes by swiftly adapting according to circumstances and promptly resolving problems that may arise during construction.

Maintain a Master Document Register for all engineering deliverables in Electronic Data Management Systems (EDMS) ensuring traceability and swift retrieval of all documents.

Develop required procedures for Engineering designs EDP.

Skills and Experience

A BSC Degree in Civil Engineering from a reputable University.

Expert level in design software, including AutoCAD and Civil 3D and any other software for infrastructural design.

Minimum of 20 years’ experience in designing and supervising engineering teams on large scale projects.

Must be a registered Professional Engineer from a reputable Registration Board.

Track record of successful supervision of engineering team of major infrastructure projects and leading and training large teams working on complex projects.
